Backwater Valve
A backwater valve is a one-way gate installed in a sewer line that lets wastewater flow out but slams shut to stop sewage from flooding back into the house.
A backwater valve, sometimes called a backflow or sewer check valve, is a flap installed in the main sewer line, usually near where it leaves the house. Normal outgoing flow swings the flap open and passes through; if the public sewer surcharges and water tries to push back the other way, the flap drops shut and seals the line. It is the defense against the nightmare scenario where a flooded city main sends sewage up through basement floor drains and toilets.
Homeowners with basements, homes below the street grade, or a history of sewer backups are the usual candidates. The valve sits in an accessible pit or cleanout with a clear lid so it can be checked, because the flap and its seal collect debris over time and need periodic cleaning to keep sealing. A neglected valve can stick open and offer no protection, or stick shut and block the home’s own drainage.
Many cities now require or subsidize backwater valves in flood-prone areas, and some insurers ask about one. It protects only against backflow from the municipal side; it does nothing for a clog in the home’s own lateral downstream of the valve.

- Drain Field / Leach Field : A drain field, or leach field, is the network of buried perforated pipes and gravel that releases treated septic effluent into the soil for final filtering.
- Septic Tank : A septic tank is the buried watertight container that holds household wastewater long enough for solids to settle out before the liquid flows to the drain field.
- Hydro Jetting : Hydro jetting clears a drain or sewer line by blasting high-pressure water through a special nozzle, scouring the pipe walls clean rather than just punching a hole through a clog.
- Effluent : Effluent is the clarified liquid wastewater that flows out of a septic tank to the drain field after the solids have settled and floated out of it.
